Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie is the highest-rated game adaptation of all time
The new Resident Evil movie is a critical success
As beloved as the Resident Evil game series is, its film adaptations have been rather hit-or-miss. None of the series’ prior movies has proved popular with critics, but that has changed with Zach Cregger’s 2026 Resident Evil movie.
With a 97% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, 2026’s Resident Evil movie is currently the highest-rated video game movie adaptation of all time. For context, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which previously held the top spot, had a rating of 86%.
This year’s live-action Resident Evil movie comes from the director behind Weapons and Barbarian. The film does not contain any of the characters from the Resident Evil games or adapt any specific Resident Evil game. Instead, the movie tells a new story that pays tribute to the games without ripping off their content. The Seattle Times’ Dominic Baez said in his review that “it could be an “RE” game but doesn’t just do a shot-for-shot remake of an already existing game”.
Cregger’s new Resident Evil film will come to cinemas on September 18th. Based on the movie’s trailers, this new film looks promising. The trailer first suggests the movie will play out like many of the games. The horror seems small-scale initially, but quickly descends into something more nightmarish. The trailer starts with the main character at a small, isolated home, but moves into a town, or perhaps a city-scale outbreak.
