Kojima Productions, the studio behind the Metal Gear franchise and the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, is no more. The voice actor for Solid Snake, Akio Otsuka, stated this on Twitter. The tweet, which is in Japanese, stated that Kojima Productions ‘got dissolved’, as translated by Kotaku. Kotaku also noted that Otsuka used the word ‘kaisan’, which translates to ‘break-up’.

Otsuka also states that ‘due to hard effort, the game is just about finished. It’s bound to be a supreme masterpiece. Even if this is the last time, [Metal Gear Solid] lives forever.’

Of course rumours had been swirling around for months. In March, Hideo Kojima’s name and the logo of Kojima Productions disappeared from the official site of MGS V: The Phantom Pain. Shortly after, Konami cancelled the Silent Hills reboot that Kojima and Guillermo Del Toro were working on. The president of Konami then gave an interview in which he praised mobile devices, disowning the console platforms on which Metal Gear Solid games have been coming out for 25 years.

At the end of May Konami came up with an apology to fans. They stated the company had undergone structural reorganization and would remain committed to releasing console video games.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain launches 1 September 2015 on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. If the disbanding of Kojima Productions will have influence on the PC port, which has no launch date as of yet, is unknown, but we will keep you up to date.

It is a shame, I'm not the biggest MGS fan in the world, I only started with them on the PS3 game (can't even remember the name) but they are fantastic games. They are clearly one of the industries finest and very well known and loved so for them to be no more sucks.Quote

Japanese publishers are the most inept in the world, flip flopping between strategies and goals. At least EA and Ubisoft release games, whereas the Japanese ones other than Sony don't seem to have a clue as to what they are doing.Quote
