But is 3nm really 3nm?

TSMC is set to build their first 3nm Fab in Taiwan

TSMC has announced plans to build their first 3nm fabrication facility in Tainan Science Park in southern Taiwan, with plans to start 3nm production by 2022.

This announcement comes as a surprise to many, as it was rumoured that TSMC would build their 3nm production plant in the United States, though it seems now that the company's existing infrastructure and supply chains and the co-operation of the Taiwanese government proved more beneficial to the company than potential investment and financial incentives from the USA.

It has been estimated that the facility would require 50-80 hectares of land and require an investment of around $15.7 billion from the company.

TSMC recognizes and is grateful for the (Taiwan) government’s clear commitments to resolve any issues, including land, water, electricity and environmental protection,

TSMC has stated that their 5nm process is on track to launch on 2019, with the company planning to ramp up their 7nm during 2018, which is an interesting prospect given their planned use of EUV technology from AMSL.

This quarter TSMC has also gotten their first revenue from the company's 10nm production node, trailing behind Samsung by around four months.

ASML sees 25% revenue boost as demand grows for EUV

3nm? Well... I'll believe it when I see it. Their 3nm will probably be equal to Intel's 7nm.Quote
