MSI rectifies PSU mistakes with free 16-pin to dual 8-pin cable offer
MSI offers free 16-pin to dual 8-pin power cable adapters to new purchasers of its GS PCIe 5.0 series power supplies
Earlier this year, we reviewed MSI’s MPG A1000GS PCIE5 power supply, and it left us baffled. While this PSU shipped with two 16-pin 12V-2×6 connectors, it only offered users a single 8-pin PCIe power connector. The same is true for its larger 1250W counterpart. In our minds, this configuration was a mistake, and it seems clear now that MSI agrees with us. For the rest of this year, MSI will be offering purchasers of its MPG A1250GS PCIE5 and MPG A1000GS PCIE5 a free 16-pin to 2x 8-pin power adapter.
With MSI’s free cable, their MPG A1250GS PCIE5 and MPG A1000GS PCIE5 PSUs now support three 8-pin PCIe power outputs. That’s enough to power any 8-pin powered graphics cards, including Nvidia’s RTX 3090 and AMD’s newer RX 9070 XT GPUs.
To get your free cable, you will need to follow some instructions on MSI’s website. This offer will be available to purchasers of MSI’s MPG A1250GS PCIE5 and MPG A1000GS PCIE5 until December 31st 2025 (or while stocks last).
Honestly, we feel these power supplies from MSI should have shipped with a free 16-pin to dual 8-pin adapter. Having a single 8-pin power connector isn’t enough for many modern PC hardware configurations. Thankfully, MSI has made efforts to rectify this mistake.
Thankfully, the power draw of two 8-pin PCIe cables isn’t enough to saturate the power capacity of a single 12V-2×6 power connector. Two 8-pin PCIe power connectors are rated for 300W of power draw. That’s half of what a 12V-2×6 cable is rated for. As such, users of this adapter should not be concerned about pulling too much power through their 12V-2×6 cables.
