A PS4 Kernel Exploit revealed – opens the door for Jailbreaking

A developer called Spectre has released a PS4 Kernel exploit on GitHub, allowing hackers to run arbitrary code on the system, acting as a first step towards future jailbreaking and other kernel-level modifications.

The exploit does not contain any code relating to bypassing the PS4’s anti-piracy system or running custom “homebrew” software, though it does open the door for other hackers to create such mechanisms. This exploit works on the PS4’s 4.05 firmware, which is not the console’s most recent firmware release, though it is possible that this hack can be ported over to future updates.

Most console manufacturers lock down their hardware to protect their systems from piracy and to prevent unauthorised software from being utilised within their hardware ecosystem. This new exploit will please both those who wish to create custom software for their PS4 consoles and those who want to open up the system to piracy.

Specture specifically released no code relating to the PS4’s anti-piracy mechanisms or for running homebrew software to avoid legal issues with Sony, who are undoubtedly annoyed at the release of this exploit.

This exploit offers some clear potential when it comes to Jailbreaking PS4 systems, providing plenty of room for hackers to tinker with their consoles. Will this result in PS4 game piracy? That remains to be seen, though it will be interesting to see what this exploit can lead too.
