AMD RX 9070 XT GPU listing reveals new AI Radeon Image Sharpening feature for RDNA 4

It looks like AMD’s Radeon Image Sharpening feature is getting an AI upgrade thanks to the release of RDNA 4

An early listing for a Gigabyte RX 9070 XT graphics card (as spotted by @Olrak29_and @momomo_us) mentions a new AI feature that will be available with AMD’s upcoming RDNA 4 graphics cards. This feature may enhance AMD’s Radeon Image Sharpening technology may be enhanced through the power of AI.

AMD’s current implementation of Radeon Image Sharpening (RIS) is a driver-level option for Radeon GPUs that can enhance the visuals of games. Using a contrast adaptive algorithm, Radeon Image Sharpening can enhance the clarity of games. Developers can integrate this tech directly into their games games as FidelityFX Contrast Adaptive Sharpening (CAS).

Using AI, AMD may be able to enhance the quality of its sharpening algorithm to deliver better visual results. This could make games appear sharper without introducing unwanted artefacts. If it works as intended, it could deliver higher levels of image quality in games with no meaningful downsides.

AI-enhanced RIS could be part of AMD’s AI push with its Radeon RX 9070-series (RDNA 4) GPUs. Will AMD enhance any of their other Radeon driver features with AI? AI-enhanced Fluid Motion Frames? HYPR-X AI? Radeon Super Resolution AI?
