Assassin’s Creed Shadows is coming to Mac on day 1
For the first time in the series’ history, an Assassin’s Creed game is launching on Mac on day 1
For the first time in the series’ history, Ubisoft is releasing a new Assassin’s Creed game on Mac on the same date as the game’s PC and console versions. Assassin’s Creed Shadows is coming to Mac, and it will be available through the Mac App Store. The Mac version will not be available through Steam.
On the Mac App Store, the game is said to require macOS 14 (or later) and an M1 series processor (or newer). However, the game will look and play best on Apple’s M3 and M4 series Macs, as they support hardware raytracing capabilities.
Based on the Mac version’s lack of a Steam release, it seems clear that Apple funded this Mac port’s development. The game will utilise Apple’s Metal 3 API, and will support HDR on Mac systems. Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be a “native” Mac App, and it will take advantage of the full capabilities of Apple’s M-series processors.
The release of this Mac-port is part of Apple’s ongoing efforts to make Mac a viable gaming platform. So far, these efforts have not resulted in strong game sales. Regardless, it highlights the capabilities of Apple’s hardware and acts as a solid way for Apple to market the capabilities of its newest devices.
If nothing else, the Mac release of Shadows will showcase how far Apple devices have come in gaming. How will it run on Mac compared to a Windows-based gaming PC? I guess we will find our soon.
