Bethesda apologises for DOOM VFR's Oculus Rift bugs at launch

When Bethesda released DOOM VFR on PC and PSVR, the game lacked support for Oculus' Rift VR headset, with users experiencing difficulties when playing the game on day-1. Some outlets have suggested that this lack of Rift support is due to the ongoing legal battle between Zenimax, Bethesda's parent company and Oculus, who currently owe Zenimax $500 million.

Since launch, Valve has released an update to SteamVR which enables Rift support in the game, which updates SteamVR API to support the Oculus Rift headset, allowing former HTC Vive exclusive games to support other VR headsets.

Bethesda has released an official response to these issues, confirming that the game was developed for both PSVR and HTC Vive, with the development team creating no official support for both Oculus' Rift and Microsoft's Windows 10 Mixed Reality headsets. The game was never advertised as supporting either of these VR platforms, though Valve's SteamVR-to-Rift update has enabled Oculus' VR platform to play the game.

Today, DOOM VFR was officially released for HTC Vive and PSVR. Our development team has focused on making the game look and play great on those two platforms first. However, as we’ve always said, our goal with all of our VR titles is to bring them to as many platforms as possible and we continue to evaluate expanding these options. When and if we have more information about additional platforms, we will let everyone know.

At launch, we are only supporting Vive and PSVR. While we’ve heard Steam has been updated to allow the game to be playable on Rift via a Beta, the development team has not yet had an opportunity to test, optimize, and refine the game for Oculus Rift. That is why the game was not playable on Rift immediately; we don’t want anyone to have a bad experience on something we haven’t tested yet.

We understand Rift owners found this frustrating today, and we apologize for any confusion. Our goal is always to provide players the most stable and optimized experience on every platform we support.

Developing games for VR is a difficult process, with every VR platform featuring unique control methods, software sets and other specifications. Bethesda has focused on SteamVR and HTC's Vive headset when creating DOOM VFR for PC, creating a difficult situation for those who use other VR headsets on the platform.
