Bungie delays Destiny 2: The Final Shape until Summer 2024
Destiny 2’s The Final Shape expansion has been delayed until June 2024
Bungie has confirmed the long-rumoured delay for Destiny 2: The Final Shape, the expansion that will act as the end of the game’s long-running Light and Darkness storyline. The Final Shape has now been delayed until June 4th 2024.
With this delay, Bungie wants The Final Shape to be “bigger and bolder”. Bungie plans to share more about The Final Shape in April 2024, showcasing new gameplay, new content additions, and more.
Until the release of Destiny 2: The Final Shape, Bungie will be adding new content to Destiny 2 with the game’s “Season of the Wish”. The majority of this season’s new content will be delivered between now and February. Additional content is in the works to tide players over until the launch of The Final Shape.
Below is Bungie’s full Destiny 2 announcement. We have also included Bungie’s video update below.
The Final Shape is the culmination of the first ten years of Destiny storytelling and, for Guardians everywhere, countless hours spent together. We want to honor that journey, so weâre taking the time we need to deliver an even bigger and bolder vision, one that we hope will be remembered and treasured for years to come.
Naturally, this change brings up questions about our upcoming release calendar. Season of the Wish begins tomorrow and will extend until the launch of The Final Shape in June. While the majority of content and narrative for Season of the Wish will run from late November to February as originally planned, the team is adding new content available for all players to jump into until the launch of The Final Shape.
In February, this will include new weekly progression-based quests called Wishes, and the launch of Moments of Triumph with unique rewards. Next, weâre moving Guardian Games up to March with a refreshed focus on class vs. class competition. Then, beginning in April, weâre delivering a two-month content update available to everyone called Destiny 2: Into the Light, which will prepare players for their Guardianâs journey into the Traveler. All of this is in addition to the ongoing efforts from our PvP Strike Team, including three new PvP maps dropping in May.
We know youâre eager to get your hands on The Final Shape. In that sense, delays arenât fun. For our part, we are excited to have the extra time needed to bring our vision for The Final Shape to life for all of you. Weâre looking forward to sharing much more in April, including all-new gameplay, to showcase the significant content additions currently in development.
Thanks for reading and for being on this journey with us.

Recent months have seen layoffs at Bungie, following a sharp decline in Destiny’s player count and a major drop in revenue. Destiny 2’s Lightfall expansion missed its revenue targets, receiving a poor reception from fans. Recent layoffs have seen several well-known Bungie veterans leave the studio. This has disappointed many hardcore Destiny fans.
With the delay of The Final Shape, Bungie hopes to reignite the passion of their fanbase and make their game as popular, and profitable, as it was before. Will they succeed? Who knows…
