Capcom removes its Enigma DRM from Resident Evil 4 following backlash

Capcom removes its Enigma DRM from Resident Evil 4 after less than a month

Last month, Capcom removed Denuvo from Resident Evil 4 on PC and replaced it with their Enigma DRM. While the removal of Denuvo is usually seen as good news, the addition of Enigma caused issues.

PC gamers reported performance issues after the update, which led to a huge backlash from Resident Evil fans. This is understandable, as Capcom has made its product worse. DRM is intended to act as an anti-piracy tool, but when implemented poorly, its negative consequences can make paid-for copies of games inferior to pirated versions. For Resident Evil 4, the addition of Enigma caused huge CPU-related performance drops.

Following a wave of complaints, Capcom has officially removed Enigma from Resident Evil 4. This should restore the game’s performance to pre-update levels; or higher when combined with the removal of Denuvo.

With the game’s newest update, Resident Evil 4 should run faster than ever before on PC. Now the game appears to have no additional DRM beyond Steam’s standard checks. This is great news for PC gamers, especially for gamers with lower-end systems. After all, lower-end systems are impacted most by the performance overhead of DRM checks.
