Capcom says no to AI generated game content in Q&A

Capcom claims that it doesn’t plan to use AI-generated materials as part of “game content”

As part of a new Q&A with investors, Capcom has confirmed that it has no plans to utilise assets made by AI in its games. However, this does not mean that Capcom is entirely anti-AI. After all, Capcom’s Resident Evil Requiem was centre stage at Nvidia’s DLSS 5 reveal.

Capcom has stated that it plans to use AI technology to improve its “efficiency and productivity” during game development. Right now, Capcom is exploring how AI can be used in various areas. This includes graphics, sound, and programming.

Based on Capcom’s comments, the company has no intention to generate 3D worlds and game assets using prompts. However, the company appears interested in AI tools that could accelerate the workflows of human artists. So that’s a no to AI-generated materials, but a yes to human-authored materials using AI-enabled tools.

Question: I’d like to know how to handle generative AI in game development.

Answer: Our company will not implement the materials generated by our AI into game content.
However, we plan to actively utilize this technology to improve efficiency and productivity in the game development process. Therefore, we are currently exploring ways to use it in various areas, such as graphics, sound, and programming.

Capcom

Capcom, like all game developers, should be well aware of how controversial artificial intelligence is amongst gamers. When AI-authored assets and art are found in games, there is always a backlash. It looks like Capcom plans to avoid this problem by keeping its assets and materials human-made. That said, Capcom’s stance isn’t entirely anti-AI. Capcom doesn’t appear to be against the use of AI tools. Additionally, it wasn’t against Nvidia using its games at the center of its DLSS 5 AI showcase.
