C&C fans rejoice! EA has given us the gifts of source code and Steam Workshop support

EA has released source code for many classic Command and Conquer games and has added Steam Workshop support for others

Today is a big day for C&C fans. EA has just given Command and Conquer fans two incredible gifts, both of which will empower the game’s fanbase for many years to come. EA has released full source code under a GPL license for several classic Command and Conquer titles. Additionally, EA has added Steam Workshop support to several Command and Conquer games on Steam.

With the release of source code, EA has allowed community modders to go nuts with their classic Command and Conquer titles. C&C enthusiasts can remix, rework, and redistribute these games without any risk of EA’s lawyers getting involved. This opens the door to fan-made updates, reworks, and the release of entirely new games based on these classic strategy games.

Steam Workshop support for several C&C titles

Steam Workshop support has arrived for Command and Conquer: Renegade, Generals/Zero Hour, Tiberium Wars, Kane’s Wrath, Red Alert 3/Uprising, and Tiberian Twilight. Additionally, EA has updated the Mission Editor and World Builder tools for these games, allowing new maps to be released directly to each game’s Steam Workshop page.

With this change, Valve’s Steam Workshop will become the new home for community-made maps for these classic Command and Conquer titles.

What about Red Alert 2 and Tiberian Sun?

Note that EA did not mention two Command and Conquer games. Red Alert 2, Tiberian Sun, and their expansions were not part of this reveal. Both games didn’t get a source code release or Steam Workshop support. Why? Maybe EA are working on a new set of Command and Conquer Remasters?
