CIG releases PC system requirements for Star Citizen’s Single Player – Squadron 42

Star Citizen has been in development for quite some time, with Cloud Imperium Games setting no firm release date for the MMO Star Citizen or the game’s single-player component, Squadron 42.

The two titles are easily some of the most ambitious games to ever be conceived, presenting not a game world but an entire galaxy to explore and a scope that is so large that many believe that the game will never release. What little of the game that has been shown so far has been visually breathtaking, delivering unprecedented levels of detail in places. These level of graphical fidelity has leaf many to wonder if today’s low-mid-range hardware would even be able to handle the full game.

PC system requirements for Squadron 42 have been placed on the game’s website, revealing some extreme hardware recommendations but little in the way of precise component selection. Here 4GB of VRAM is strongly recommended, as is 16 GB of system memory and an SSD-based storage solution.

Squadron 42’s PC System Requirements

* Windows 7 (64bit) with Service Pack 1, Windows 8 (64bit), Windows 10 – Anniversary Update (64bit)
* DirectX 11 Graphics Card with 2GB RAM (4GB strongly recommended)
* Quad Core CPU
* 16GB RAM
* SSD strongly recommended

Cloud Imperium Games’ SSD recommendation was not unexpected, with the developer partnering with Intel to showcase the benefits of their new Optane memory type. Both Star Citizen and Squadron 42 have been developed with fast storage in mind, which will likely make the game challenging to play on traditional HDDs.

By the time Star Citizen and Squadron 42 officially releases, the average gaming PC will likely be significantly more powerful, hopefully making the game’s high system requirements seem a little bit easier to swallow. At this time the exact CPU and GPU requirements for the final game can only be guessed at, though it is possible that Star Citizen will be the next Crysis.
