Civilization 7 is coming to PC and Consoles on February 11th
Civilization 7 has finally been showcased
Firaxis has finally shown off Civilization 7, and to say the least the game’s reveal has been controversial. Huge changes are being made to the Civilization formula, and that has many fans of the franchise nervous. Even so, this is what happens with every new Civilization game, which means that fans of the series should expect big changes.
The good news for PC gamers is that Civilization VII should be easy to run. After all, the game is launching on last-generation consoles, which includes Nintendo Switch. That means that Civilization VII will be able to run on some pretty low-spec PCs. That said, you will need a more powerful system if you want to max out this game’s graphics and play with the largest possible game maps.
Visually, the game is a cross between Civilization V and Civilization VI. The cartoonish visuals are toned back with this release, though they remain more stylised than Civilization V. The game map itself looks much better than prior games, with more detailed tiles and an aesthetic that looks like a model town/railway. This style should please fans of Civilization V and VI alike, though the visuals aren’t overly advanced.
Civilization 7 has a new take on ages, cities, armies, and building
A lot has changes with Civ VII, but it is still Civilization. The game’s “Ages” system has been reworked to give gamers longer, more distinct, ages. These new ages will have their own mechanics, systems, and challenges. With each age, Civilizations will change. This means that they will get new leaders and traits. This means that your civilization will always be at the height of its power, and that players will have unique units and buildings to utilise in every age.
Builders are gone in Civilization VII, and the “Districts” system in Civilization 6 has been fundamentally changed. Cities will remain spread out, but culture, science, and production buildings will not be confined to singular locations. Cities will be more city-like, and cities will be settled as towns before growth upgrades them to cities.
Armies have also changes in Civ VII. Units no longer get battlefield promotions. Now, generals are promoted over time. They will give bonus’ to units under their command. This means that players will want to kill their opponents general, as that will have ramifications across the battlefield. Furthermore, each general can be specialised to excel at raiding, conquering, or defensive battles.
Civilization 7 will play very differently to older games in the franchise. That said, these changes will give players a fresh and new experience. Will this game’s changes be for everyone? No, but it’s worth remembering that this is a new game, not a Civilization 6 expansion.
When can I play it?
Civilization VII is coming to PC and consoles on February 11th. Those who pre-order the game’s standard edition will get the game’s Tecumseh and Shawnee Pack. This pack will always be available with the more premium editions of the game. Additionally, Founders Edition purchasers will be able to play the game 5 days early on February 6th. Civilization VII will be available on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store.
