COGBox brings all classic Xbox 360 Gears of War games to PC
Native PC ports of all classic Gears of War games are now available on PC
All four Xbox 360 Gears of War games are now playable natively on PC, and we can thank Shagg and their COGBox project. Through this project, Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, and Gears of War: Judgment are available to play natively on PC.
This static recompilation project requires gamers to own each game in the collection and to have the title updates for each game. While this project takes a little effort to get working, it rewards gamers with options that emulators cannot provide. This includes support for any resolution (up to 5K), anti-aliasing/upscaling, ultrawide support, native PC controls, and more. It even supports low input lag technologies like AMD Anti-Lag 2 and Nvidia Reflex.
Hello all, I’m Shagg and I’m building a launcher for my own native Windows versions of three(eventually four) Xbox 360 games, built by static recompilation, with a launcher called COGBox that sets up your own copy of each game and starts it. These games were one of my favorite franchises so this project is near and dear to my heart. Gears of War 1 is currently not a priority because there’s about 5 versions (it feels like) that are available natively to PC.
Download the latest release · You need your own copy of each game. No game files are included or ever will be.

The games’ original Xbox 360 code is translated ahead of time into C++ and compiled into ordinary Windows programs – no emulator interprets the game while you play. The parts the console’s hardware did are supplied by our code, most importantly our own renderer, which draws every frame on Direct3D 12 (or Vulkan, experimental). That gives the ports what an emulator can’t easily offer.
COGBox aims to be the best way to play all classic Gears of War games on PC. COGBox enables high-resolution support, higher framerate support, and upgrades like HDR10 and 16x anisotropic filtering. Thanks to COGBox, the Xbox 360’s classic Gears of War games have never looked better.
With Microsoft seeming unwilling to bring its original Gears of War games to PC, the community has stepped in. If anything, projects like this should inspire Microsoft’s newly forged Xbox Labs team. Microsoft could easily create and distribute many of its Xbox 360 classics on PC using similar methods to COGBox. While Microsoft appears to be working on an official Xbox 360 emulator for PC, native PC releases are preferable to emulated versions.
