CDPR confirms huge performance drops when Nvidia Hairworks is enabled in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered

CD Projekt Red (CDPR) has told PC gamers to disable Nvidia Hairworks in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered due to its impact on performance. Currently, it massively reduces performance on PC, and the studio is looking for a fix for this unintended behaviour. A patch to address this issue is currently in the works.

On Reddit, one user saw their framerates dip from 171 FPS to 67 FPS by enabling Hairworks on their system. This is a colossal performance decrease, and not one that’s worthwhile. Something appears to be wrong with the way that Hairworks is currently implemented, as it is having a much larger impact on performance than expected.

For now, PC gamers should disable Hairworks if they want to avoid performance issues. This bug doesn’t appear to affect all PC gamers, so if your game is running smoothly, you don’t need to change your graphics settings.

CD Projekt Red has not issued an ETA for their upcoming performance fix.
