DOOM Classic: RAY TRACED is here and it's AWESOME!

Ray Traced DOOM? Yes Please!

Today is a great day to be a DOOM fan, because the PC modder sultim_t has created a ray traced version of id Software's DOOM. The game has been customised to support real-time path tracing, using the PrBoom sourceport of DOOM as a baseline, requiring only an original DOOM WAD to function.

If you watch the trailer below, you will see for yourself that DOOM looks incredible with ray tracing. Sprite cast shadows, weapon blasts emit light, and a flashlight has been added to DOOM to better illuminate the game's darker areas.

Is this a joke?

No, it isn't. I downloaded and played DOOM Ray Traced this morning. It works, and it is awesome. Nvidia RTX graphics card users will be glad to know that this version of DOOM supports DLSS, and that we have been able to run the game with stable 60+ FPS framerates on an RTX 3070 Ti graphics card with DLSS enabled.

Sadly, we initially tried to test this port of DOOM using a Radeon RX 6800 graphics card, which failed to boot the game. This suggests that the port only works on Nvidia RTX series graphics cards. That said, your mileage may vary.

Where can I download this?

To play this version of DOOM, you will need an original DOOM WAD file. The easiest way to get this is using the Steam or GOG versions of Ultimate DOOM. Look into the games files and you will find it. Currently, Ultimate DOOM has a 70% discount on GOG, making the game £1.99 in the UK.

To download and install sultim-t's ray traced version of PrDoom, you must head over to GitHub and follow the developer's instructions. Thankfully, these instructions are easy to follow.

Might do. Game files for Xbox Game Pass titles can be hard to access though. Or at least they used to be.Quote
