EA announces planned delisting for classic Battlefield games
EA starts sunsetting their classic PS3/360 era Battlefield games
On Twitter/X, the official Battlefield Comms account has announced that they are delisting several classic Battlefield titles from online platforms later this month.
Many of these soon-to-be delisted games are from the height of Battlefield’s popularity. Today, the Battlefield franchise is a shadow of its former self. Battlefield 2042 has a relatively small following when compared to prior releases. That said, Battlefield V has maintained a strong following on PC, with over 27,000 players on Steam alone at the time of writing.
On Wednesday, July 31st the following Battlefield titles will be removed from digital storefronts and you will no longer be able to purchase them and all extra related content such as DLC.
EA’s delisting plans will apply to Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4, and Battlefield Hardline on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Furthermore, the online servers for these games will be shut down on November 7th 2024. Fortunately, the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of these games are unaffected.
Once the online servers for these games are closed, only the single player components of these games will remains playable. While the PC and 8th generation console versions of these games are unaffected, it is only a matter of time before EA closes those servers too.
On PC, Battlefield 4 has a small but loyal following. Currently, over 2,000 players play the game on Steam at peak times every day. For Battlefield 3, a few hundred play the game on Steam each day. As said before, it is only a matter of time before the servers for these games close. Let’s just hope that DICE will have a suitable replacement for these games when that time comes.
