EA reveals Battlefield Labs and Battlefield Studios
EA teases the future of Battlefield, revealing Battlefield Studios and Battlefield Labs
EA’s next Battlefield game is “entering a critical phase in development”, and to ensure the success of the game, EA will be collaborating with the Battlefield community more than ever before. Battlefield Labs (BL) will allow players to test future Battlefield games (“test environments”) and help shape the future of the franchise alongside Battlefield Studios.
Battlefield Studios? Yes, EA has formed Battlefield Studios, a group of developers that are focused on the Battlefield franchise. This includes DICE, MOTIVE, CRITERION, and RIPPLE EFFECT. Basically, these studios are now united under the “Battlefield Studios” banner.
Battlefield fans can now sign up to join Battlefield Labs here. Note that there will be limited spaces within the Battlefield Labs program.
Today, the storied Battlefield franchise known for uncompromising all-out warfare and world-class gameplay for over two decades, announced the most ambitious community testing program in franchise history – Battlefield Labs. The work on the next Battlefield experience is entering a critical phase in development that will benefit from collaboration with the community like never before.
The first phase of Battlefield Labs testing will go live in the coming weeks, and sign up to players is available now at battlefield.com/labs. Initial tests will include an invited group of players and servers located in Europe and North America ahead of plans to expand invitees and server locations in the future.
EA is clearly committed to releasing new Battlefield games. EA says that BL testers will be testing things that will impact “our upcoming launch and beyond.” This suggests that several new Battlefield games are in the works, not just a single game
Battlefield Labs plays a significant role in the development that Battlefield Studios is doing for the series. Battlefield Studios is comprised of DICE, creators of the Battlefield franchise; Ripple Effect, a studio led by franchise veterans working on an all-new experience for the series; Motive, the developers of the critically acclaimed Star Wars Squadrons and Dead Space; and Criterion, known for world-class racing franchises and playing a key role in several Battlefield entries.
Even today, Battlefield 1, Battlefield V, Battlefield 4, and Battlefield 2042 all have steady playerbases on PC. Clearly, there are a lot of gamers who still love the franchise. However, it remains to be seen if Battlefield Studios has what it takes to return the franchise to its glory days. Regardless, we are happy to see that EA has taken the development of the next Battlefield game seriously.
