It’s official, PlayStation games are coming to Xbox. Sony has just announced that Helldivers 2 is coming to Xbox Series X/S on August 26th. This move will open up the game to more players, expanding its player base and allowing Sony to continue supporting the game with new content and updates.
This move mirrors Microsoft’s early multi-platform plans. One of Microsoft’s first Xbox games to come to PlayStation was Sea of Thieves, a live service game that thrives when its player base is large.
Is Helldivers 2 the first of many PlayStation-to-Xbox games?
If this move is successful for Sony, other PlayStation games are likely to follow and come to Xbox platforms. That said, we do not expect any of Sony’s heavy-hitting franchises to go to Xbox anytime soon.
If future Xbox consoles are more PC-like, PlayStation games will inevitably come to Xbox
Microsoft has made it clear that the future of Xbox looks a lot like PC. Microsoft’s next-generation console will support 3rd party storefronts. That means that Sony’s PlayStation PC games will be available on Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox. Perhaps Sony has realised this and has embraced a multi-platform future? Probably not. Even so, we expect PlayStation games to come to Xbox when it is appropriate. Such moves make the most sense for multiplayer live service games like Helldivers 2. That said, Sony could easily make a lot of money bringing its other games to Xbox.
