Former 343i developer reveals why Halo 5 never received a PC version

343 insider claims that “significant tech hurdles” prevented Halo 5 from coming to PC

The Halo franchise is legendary, and in recent years, almost all of the games in the series have come to PC. Today, Halo 5 is the only mainline Halo game to remain Xbox-exclusive. Now, it has been revealed why the game never made it to PC.

According to Tyler Owens, a former Infrastructure Engineer for 343 Industries, the studio ran into “significant tech hurdles” when they first worked on a PC version of Halo 5. These tech hurdles caused the project to be scrapped. Sadly, the nature of these technological hurdles remains unknown. Regardless, the project was scrapped.

I wish but it’s never going to happen imo. I think the port that was being considered ran into significant tech hurdles and was scrapped.

Without a PC version of Halo 5, PC gamers may never be able to play every Halo game on their chosen gaming platform. Microsoft seems uninterested in bringing the game to PC, making Xbox One emulation the only future avenue that will make the game playable on PC. Since no Xbox One emulators currently exist, Halo 5 emulation remains a far-off dream. However, Xbox One to PC translation layers are in development.

This month, Microsoft reformed 343 Industries, creating Halo Studios. The Halo franchise has been moved to Unreal Engine. A new era of Halo has started, with several new games in development. If Microsoft wanted to bring the game to PC, they would have done it by now. As much as I’d love a PC version of Guardians, Microsoft seems content to leave the game on Xbox One.
