Gamescom 2020 will “definitely” take place digitally

Earlier today, the German Government enacted a nationwide ban on all major events, putting a stop to all large gatherings until the end of August, effectively cancelling Gamescom 2020.

Thankfully, this news didn’t come as a surprise for Gamescom’s organisers, who have been creating backup plans for Gamescom 2020 for quite some time. While the event’s public, in-person, event will no longer be taking place, a digital alternative is more than possible, especially given the amount of time that’s available to plan it.

Events like GDC and E3 didn’t have enough time to plan proper digital alternatives, but between now and August, Gamescom has a lot of time to get organises. The event’s organisers have been very clear “Gamescom 2020 will definitely take place digitally.”

Late last month, Gamescom’s organisers had already confirmed that Gamescom’s Opening Night Live and Gamescom Now streams would be “significantly expanded”, giving gamers more content to feast on when they are watching the event from their homes. Expect trailers, interviews, announcements and more during Gamescom’s 2020 online showcase, pretty much everything that you would usually expect from GDC.
