Gears of War Ultimate Edition owners are getting a free “Reloaded” upgrade on PC and Xbox

Microsoft gives Gears of War: Reloaded keys to Ultimate Edition owners on PC and Xbox

Microsoft is doing Gears of War fans a solid by giving Gears of War Ultimate Edition (digital) owners a free upgrade to the game’s upcoming “Reloaded” version. PC gamers on the Xbox app are now receiving messages giving them a free code for Gears of War: Reloaded, which redeems the game on both Xbox and PC.

With this free upgrade, Microsoft are addressing longstanding issues with Gears of War: Ultimate Edition’s PC version. This version of the game was a UWP (Universal Windows Platform) app. These apps are known for their performance issues on PC, with broken multi-GPU support, FreeSync/G-Sync issues, and general performance issues being common. Many of these issues have worsened since Microsoft abandoned its UWP program.

Thanks to their free upgrade to Gears of War: Reloaded, owners of Gears of War’s prior PC remaster will soon receive a version of the game that looks better and runs better on PC. Ultimate Edition owners will not need to pay any more money to Microsoft to get a functional version of Gears of War.

Honestly, this move from Microsoft was a necessary one. Microsoft needs to win over PC gamers. If Microsoft can fix its past mistakes, PC gamers will have an easier time embracing its future vision. Regardless, Microsoft still has a long way to go before it can fully earn the trust of PC gamers. Microsoft may see PC as an extension of Xbox, but many PC games want to avoid Xbox at every turn.
