Google plans to stream Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey to Project Stream beta testers

Google has officially confirmed their plans to begin beta testing their “Project Stream” technology, starting with a demanding use case, gaming. Unlike other video or audio streaming workloads, Gaming applications require low latency controller and display response times, making it an ideal workload when testing interactive streaming workloads.
On October 5th, Google plans to allow beta testers to play a free copy of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, allowing the game to be played on both laptop and desktop-grade systems, assuming that the user has access to a low latency 25Mbps internet connection or faster.

Below is a video which showcased 1080p 60FPS gameplay footage that was captured by a system using Google’s Project Stream technology, with the captured footage offering steady gameplay with a few instances of micro stuttering.

Project Stream appears to be Google’s planned game streaming service, with the digital giant partnering with Ubisoft to stress test the service. Moving forward, Ubisoft may also be planning to develop a streaming-based games service, which will allow users to game without any expensive console or PC hardware.

Streaming media has transformed the way we consume music and video, making it easy to instantly access your favorite content. It’s a technically complex process that has come a long way in a few short years, but the next technical frontier for streaming will be much more demanding than video.

We’ve been working on Project Stream, a technical test to solve some of the biggest challenges of streaming. For this test, we’re going to push the limits with one of the most demanding applications for streaming—a blockbuster video game.

We’ve partnered with one of the most innovative and successful video game publishers, Ubisoft, to stream their soon-to-be released Assassin’s Creed Odyssey® to your Chrome browser on a laptop or desktop. Starting on October 5, a limited number of participants will get to play the latest in this best-selling franchise at no charge for the duration of the Project Stream test.

Those who wish to participate in Google’s Project Stream beta can apply here, though it is worth noting that this beta will be available exclusively within the US. Applicants must be seventeen or over and have an internet connection that is capable of 25 Mbps. Project Stream supports USB controllers and operates using Google’s Chrome desktop browser.
