GTA V is the most profitable media title in history
Market Watch has released an article which has reported that Grand Theft Auto V has made over $6 billion and is continuing to sell to sell well today. In total, the game is said to have sold over 90 million units. Â
If these figures are correct, Grand Theft Auto V has made more money than any single book, film, record/album or video game in history, with sales figures that place the game as the third most popular video game in history after Tetris (170 million) and Minecraft (144 million).Â
Grand Theft Auto V’s earnings are due to the game’s strong sales and the game’s Shark card system, which allows GTA: Online players to purchase in-game cash using real-world money. Â
Rockstar released GTA V initially on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013, later releasing the game on PS4 and Xbox One in 2014 and then on PC in 2015, finding success on all platforms. So far GTA V has sold more copies than GTA IV, GTA: San Andreas and GTA: Vice City combined.Â
Financial Analysts have stated that many of the world’s highest grossing blockbuster films cannot compete with Grand Theft Auto V’s earnings, even after adjusting for inflation.Â
Far above the success of blockbuster movies like Star Wars or Gone With The Wind, which both collected more than $3 billion, adjusted for inflation. Even taking into account DVD and streaming sales would not put the biggest movie blockbusters in GTA Vâs neighborhood.
Â
With this data in mind, we can see why Rockstar Games have been so willing to delay the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 and have been continuing to invest heavily into Grand Theft Auto V’s online component. The big question now is whether or not Red Dead Redemption 2 can live up to the legacy of GTA V.Â
Market Watch’s analysis is available to read here. Red Dead Redemption 2 is set to release on October 26th on PS4 and Xbox One.Â
