We decided to take a different approach when looking at Destiny 2’s performance, deciding to spend our time looking at all of the game’s graphical presets on our GTX 1060 Strix, rather than simply retest the game in a range of GPUs under a single preset.Â
What we discovered was the Nvidia’s new drivers focus heavily on Destiny 2’s Highest graphical preset, which means that users of lower graphical settings will only see a minimal improvement to game performance.Â
When looking at the game at 1440p using the game’s highest preset we see a 20-25% performance gain when looking at both the game’s minimum and average framerate, though when using lower presets the performance impact of this driver is almost non-existent. It is clear that this driver focuses on settings like 3D Ambient Occlusion and the game’s highest Depth of Field settings and other advanced graphical effects.Â

Do AMD’s recent drivers have a performance impact?
When looking at AMD’s RX 480 using their latest drivers we can see that performance is almost identical to the game’s launch version, showing that this increase in performance is not due to a game update.Â
Back when we originally tested Destiny 2, AMD’s RX 480 had a notable performance advantage over Nvidia when using the game’s Highest preset, explaining why Nvidia would work so hard on a new Destiny 2 driver after launch.Â
It seems that Nvidia is taking drivers very seriously when AMD is found to have a performance advantage, just like in Forza Motorsport 7. Â

Looking at the results of our testing, we found that the highest levels of performance improvement could be found at higher resolutions and that the only meaningful performance gains occurred when the game was played using Destiny 2’s Highest preset, which means that those who play the game at lower graphical quality settings will be largely unaffected by this driver release. Â
