It looks like Sony’s working on a PC version of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Nixxes’ next PlayStation-to-PC conversion could be Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart

Rumour has it that Nixxes are working on a PC version of Insomniac Games’ Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, one of Sony’s first major PlayStation 5 exclusives. This rumour stems from the fact that Nixxes are looking for an UI/UX engineer that has “experience in using Coherent middleware”, a middleware that is known to be used in Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. 

Coherent Labs lists Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart as a game that utilises their technology, with Rift Apart being the only game listed on the company’s website that is a PlayStation exclusive. This lends credence to the belief that Rift Apart is Nixxes’ latest PlayStation-to-PC project. 

Sony acquired Nixxes in 2021, with the intention of using the company to bring many of their PlayStation exclusives to the PC platform. Sony’s plan for PC is simple, launch their popular titles on PC to generate larger revenues, but launch their games on PlayStation first to encourage gamers to invest in their console ecosystem. To put things another way, Sony wants to release their PlayStation exclusives onto PC a year or two after their PS4/5 release, giving them a larger return on investment from their exclusives while maintaining PlayStation as their premiere gaming platform. 

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart was one of the first games to make heavy use of the system’s SSD storage, allowing gamers to move quickly through rifts to new locations without loading screens in-between. On PC, this will likely make SSD based storage mandatory to play Rift Apart, and make the game a likely user of Microsoft’s DirectStorage API.
