Konami are selling secondary Metal Gear: Survive save slots

Metal Gear: Survive is a divisive title, acting as Konami’s first Metal Gear game after the departure of Hideo Kojima and their chance to prove that the series remains in capable hands.

To be 100% clear, this is not what any Metal Gear fan would expect from a new iteration in the series, with Konami instead taking the capabilities of the Fox Engine to create a Zombie ridden Survival game. This game isn’t the Metal Gear that you know and love.

The other problem with the game is that it contains a lot of microtransactions, with Konami going so far as to lock a secondary save game slot behind a 1000 Survive coin paywall. To put this in real terms,  $9.99 will buy you 1150 Survive coins in the US. This limitation is terrible news for families who share a single PSN/Xbox Live or Steam account, as it means that they will need to pay to allow others to have an active save within the game.

While there have been games that have limited saves in the past, it is difficult to see this as anything other than greed on the part of Konami, as it is clear that there is no technological limitation to prevent multiple saves. While this tactic could be forgiven in a free-to-play game, Metal Gear Survive is a premium release, offering no real excuse why this function is not available for free.

So far reviews are mostly positive for Metal Gear Survive on Steam, with the title’s 24-hour player peak being 7,555 at the time of writing, almost half as many players as Call of Duty WWII on Steam.
