Mafia III Developer Hangar 13 hit with layoffs – 2K Confirms
While these performance issues were a significant setback, it was undeniable that Mafia III was financially successful game for both Hangar 13 and their publisher 2K, shipping over 5 million copies to retailers.Â
The publisher 2K has confirmed reports that there have been layoffs at Hangar 13, though the publisher has stated that they are working with affected employees to find them work elsewhere within 2K. At this time it is unknown how many developers have been laid off, though Kotaku has stated that it is a large portion of the developer employees after speaking with Hangar 13 staff.Â
Right now Hangar 13 is reportedly prototyping to find their next big game project, which means that the company hasn’t committed to a new game project.Â
Below is a comment from 2K games regarding these layoffs. Â
Â
2K can confirm that there have been staff reductions at Hangar 13 in order to ensure that the studioâs resources are properly aligned with its long-term development plans,
These reductions will not influence 2Kâs ability to create and deliver its products that are currently in development. We never take these matters lightly, and are working with the affected employees to support them and explore potential opportunities throughout our organization. Â
Â
At this time Hangar 13’s future remains unclear, especially given their apparent lack of a major game project. It is likely that the Hangar 13 will become a satellite developer for 2K, assisting other developers with their games when required.  Â
