Mafia has returned to Steam after a five-year absence

Around five years ago, Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven (otherwise known as Mafia), was removed for Steam without any warning or reasoning, preventing the game from being purchased by new players despite the fact that existing owners could continue to download and play the game.

Last month, Mafia returned to sale on GOG and now, just over a month later, the game has returned to Steam, with existing users getting a large update to the title which removes and replaces the game’s licensed soundtrack with new license-free music.

This rerelease somewhat confirms rumours that the game was originally removed from Steam due to the game’s soundtrack, with the game being removed from sale 10 years after the game’s release, exactly when one would expect such a licensing contract to expire.
