Metal Gear Solid 4 has a locked framerate on PC
Metal Gear Solid 4 will lack an unlocked framerate on PC
The first review for the PC version of Metal Gear Solid 4 (MGS4) has been released, and it confirms what many PC gamers have feared. Metal Gear Solid 4 features a locked framerate on PC. According to PC Gamer, the game is locked to 60 FPS on PC. While the game will run much faster than its original PS3 version, which couldn’t deliver a stable 30 FPS, it does limit the game’s potential on high-end gaming PCs.
This means users of high-refresh-rate displays will not be able to benefit from them. That said, solutions like Lossless Scaling, Nvidia Smooth Motion, and AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) should make higher framerates possible through Frame Generation.
Konami has done good work here, though at times the bare minimum: you can now play MGS4 at 4K (yay!), but at a locked 60 fps (less yay).
Still, that’s a lot better than the extremely unreliable 30 fps it once struggled to maintain.

PC Customisations
While the game’s locked framerate is disappointing, PC Gamer reports that MGS4 is Steam Deck Verified. The game also mimics PS3 Sixaxis game functions using supported controllers like Valve’s Steam Deck and Steam Controller (which have gyro controls). The game’s infamous “disc two” joke also has new voice lines that refer to the game’s new PC version. Yes, the game has new voice lines to make the joke work on new platforms. Otocon isn’t going to call your PC a PlayStation 3.
Konami clearly hasn’t simply allowed the PS3 version of MGS4 to run at higher resolutions and call it a day. The game runs much better on modern systems than it ever did on PlayStation 3. That said, it lacks some features many gamers would expect from a modern PC release.
Metal Gear Solid 4 is coming to PC on August 27th as part of the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 on Steam.
