Metro 2033 and Last Light Redux are getting free next-gen upgrades ahead of Metro 2039’s launch
4A Games has announced free next-gen upgrades for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux. These free updates will arrive on PC first on October 22nd, and on October 29th on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5.
These upgrades arrive before Metro 2039 releases in February 2027. This gives fans of the series a great opportunity to return to the series. It also gives newcomers a better starting point. Gamers on all platforms will benefit from improved visuals. Console players will also benefit from a new 4K 60 FPS mode and, on supported hardware, a 4K 120 FPS mode.
Note that 4A Games intends to maintain the original aesthetic of Metro 2033 and Last Light Redux. 4A Games focuses on delivering meaningful improvements without fundamentally altering the game’s look. Alongside graphical improvements, this update will deliver better animation quality, higher-quality audio, and a wave of community-led fixes and quality-of-life improvements.
As a huge thank you to our players, we’re announcing that a free update is coming for all owners of METRO 2033 Redux and METRO Last Light Redux that makes several improvements and enhancements for modern hardware.

What has improved
4A Games’ next-gen update for Metro 2033/Last Light Redux aims to improve graphical fidelity with 4K textures, higher-resolution gameplay, and modern upscaling. On PC, the game supports DLSS; on PS5 Pro, it supports PSSR; and on other platforms, it supports TSR (Temporal Super Resolution). For the first time, console players will also benefit from hardware tessellation. This feature was previously PC-only. On Xbox, the game will also be upgraded to a “Play Anywhere” title, giving Xbox gamers access to each game’s PC version.
So, what have we done? This is not a full remaster or remake – the original METRO Redux experience and aesthetic has been preserved – but we have made careful, meaningful improvements to take advantage of the latest PC and console hardware. All platforms will include support for 4K textures, bringing greater depth and atmosphere to the haunting world of METRO. The update enhances gameplay immersion through improved animation fidelity, higher-quality audio and richer environmental detail. We have also managed to implement a range of community led bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements.
The METRO Redux Next-Gen Update adds native support for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S, alongside platform-specific enhancements such as PSSR support on PlayStation 5 Pro, TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing support on Xbox Series X, and Spatial Audio support on Xbox platforms. Players on console can experience true 4K at 60FPS and upscaled 4K at 120FPS (with the right monitor or TV hardware), higher quality lighting, shadows and particle effects. Plus, we are supporting Adaptive Triggers for DualSense controllers and Impulse Triggers on Xbox controllers. Players will also benefit from hardware tessellation and displacement at runtime on consoles, Power Optimized Mode on Xbox and Power Saver Mode support for PlayStation.
With Xbox Handheld and Xbox Play Anywhere support, the journey through the Metro can continue wherever you choose.
For PC we have implemented DLSS support, spatial audio support as well as increased quality of life community bugfixes and frequently asked for improvements.
