Metro 2039 is coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S this Winter
4A Games has officially revealed Metro 2039
Metro 2039 has been officially revealed, and it’s coming to PC and consoles this Winter. On PC, the game will be released on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and on Xbox as an “Xbox Play Anywhere” title. The game will also be coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
In Metro 2039, players will return to the Moscow Metro with a new protagonist, “the stranger”. The game’s story was created in collaboration with Dmitry Glukhovsky, the author of the Metro book series on which the game is based. This game is due to be darker than prior entries in the series, which is saying something given the post-apocalyptic monster-filled world of the Metro franchise.
METRO 2039 takes you to the dark heart of the Moscow Metro where the last survivors of the nuclear apocalypse cling to existence in the tunnels and subways of the ruined city, hope is lost… the future looks bleak… if there is one.
We are thrilled to officially unveil the next mainline METRO title – METRO 2039, coming to Steam this Winter.
– Metro 2039
Metro 2039 is set in 2039, several years after the events of Metro Exodus. The Metro is now controlled by the Novoreigh, a brutal dictatorship led by Hunter, who should be a familiar character to series veterans. The reveal trailer above features a short gameplay section that highlights the game’s spectacular visuals.
This game is a single-player story with exploration, stealth, combat and survival elements. We expect to see more gameplay for Metro 2039 as the game’s launch approaches.
The year is 2039. For a quarter century, the last survivors of nuclear war have been locked in bitter conflict deep in the Metro tunnels beneath the poisoned city of Moscow. Now, finally, they have been united by a single leader, a fanatical Spartan known as Hunter.
But this is no peace: Hunter’s Novoreich regime rules through propaganda and fear, subjugating the population in the name of a new war for the surface against a dark and terrifying enemy.
In the wilderness beyond the city, the reclusive Stranger is haunted by violent waking nightmares. When the ghosts of his past force him out of exile, he must undertake a harrowing journey into the shattered ruins of Moscow, to the one place he swore he’d never go.
– Metro 2039
Currently, Metro 2039 does not have a firm release date. Note that the game has no listed PC system requirements. Furthermore, it is unknown how well the game will run on consoles. Will the game have a 60 FPS mode, or will this beautiful shooter have a 30 FPS framerate lock?
Unlike prior Metro games, this entry will not follow the story of Artyom. Regardless, this game will contain elements tied to prior games in the franchise.
