Metro Awakening has been revealed for PC, PSVR 2, and Meta Quest

Metro Awakening is launching this year for all major VR platforms

Deep Silver and Vertigo Games have new VR Metro game called Metro Awakening. The game was revealed at Sony’s latest PlayStation State of Play event, but the game will not be PSVR2 exclusive. When the game launches later this year, Metro Awakening will be available for SteamVR, PSVR2, and Meta Quest 2/3 headsets.

Virtigo Games is the studio behind Arizona Sunshine and other popular VR titles. In Metro Awakening, players will be places within the dark Metro universe as a doctor, Serdar, who is searching the Metro for his lost wife. The game will feature exploration, stealth gameplay, and first-person combat. The game is a prequel to the main Metro series, taking place in 2028.

The game’s story has been written by Metro creator Dmitry Glukhovsky, and players can expect the same atmosphere and as other Metro titles.

Metro Awakening is a story-driven first person adventure built exclusively for VR that blends atmospheric exploration, stealth and combat in the most immersive Metro experience yet.

The year is 2028

The survivors of nuclear Armageddon cling to existence in the buried subways of the Moscow Metro – civilization’s last refuge and tomb, where ghosts and spirits haunt the living in this man-made purgatory.

You are Serdar, a doctor braving the darkness, crippling radiation and deadly threats of the Metro in the search for your wife and the medication she so desperately needs. As your courage and sanity are pushed to the limit you must learn to walk the line between life and death, the spirit and the material world, and awaken the being you will become…

  • Lose yourself in a journey of spiritual awakening in this chilling, supernatural origins story from Metro creator Dmitry Glukhovsky
  • Experience Metro’s tense, heart-pounding gameplay in VR for the first time as condensation clouds your mask, ammo and filters run low and your torchlight flickers and dies in the darkness
  • Wield a signature arsenal of hand-made weapons, don your gas mask, and venture into the depths of the Metro where desperate bandits, mutants, and worse haunt your every step

We can expect to see and hear more about this new Metro game over the coming months. Based on the trailer above, the game looks great. Even so, VR remains a niche gaming platform, and that limits the potential success of this new Metro title.

Since the game is coming to Meta’s Quest 2 VR headset, we expect the PC system requirements for Awakening to be on the low side. The Meta Quest 2 isn’t exactly a powerful piece of hardware by PC standards, and while the PC and PSVR 2 versions will undoubtedly have better visuals, the game’s baseline on Meta Quest 2 should help the game run well on most VR PC users.
