Microsoft aims to tackle Windows 11 Sluggishness with new logging tools

Is Microsoft finally taking Windows 11’s performance seriously?

Let’s face it, Microsoft’s focus has not been on Windows. Over time, Windows 11 has become slow and sluggish, despite continuing hardware advancements. Now, it looks like Microsoft is starting to take Windows 11’s performance seriously. New development builds of Windows 11 now include logging tools that will help Microsoft spot sluggish performance and report findings to Microsoft. These logs should help Microsoft optimise Windows 11 for improved performance.

Windows Insiders can now report performance issues using the Windows Feedback Hub under the new “Desktop > System Sluggishness” category. This will attach relevant logs for Microsoft to analyse. This will help Microsoft uncover and resolve Windows 11’s performance issues.

As part of our commitment to improving Windows performance, logs are now collected when your PC has experienced any slow or sluggish performance. Windows Insiders are encouraged to provide feedback when experiencing PC issues related to slow or sluggish performance, allowing Feedback Hub to automatically collect these logs, which will help us root cause issues faster. Use the Desktop > System Sluggishness category when filing feedback to allow Feedback Hub to automatically pick up these logs. These logs are stored locally (%systemRoot%\Temp\DiagOutputDir\Whesvc folder) and only sent to Microsoft via Feedback Hub when feedback is submitted.

Let’s face it, Windows has become bloated

There was a time when every millisecond counted and every CPU cycle was used to its maximum potential. In recent times, it feels like software optimisation has become a lost art. Modern PCs are faster than ever thanks to SSD storage, faster processors, increasingly performant GPUs, and new memory generation. Despite this, Windows 11 feels slow. The might of modern hardware is being limited by OS sluggishness.

Are Microsoft’s new Windows 11 logging tools necessary?

Microsoft is relying on user feedback to identify and address Windows 11’s performance issues. While it is disappointing that Microsoft engineers are unable to spot many of these issues themselves, it makes sense that Microsoft can’t test every potential use case.

Hopefully, Microsoft’s new tools will help make Windows 11 a faster and more responsive OS. Microsoft also plans to make Windows a better OS for gamers, thanks to the OS’ upcoming “Xbox Full Screen Experience.”
