Minecraft is dropping VR support on PC next year
Minecraft’s PC version is dropping VR support in 2025
Mojang has confirmed that the PC version of Minecraft will be dropping support for VR/MR headsets in 2025. After March 2025, updates for the game will not support virtual reality. The game will still be playable outside of VR, but VR headsets will be unsupported.
This announcement comes little more than a month after Majang revealed its plan to ditch PlayStation VR (PSVR) support. Support for Sony’s VR headset will also be dropped after March 2025. Minecraft never supported Sony’s newer PlayStation VR2 (PSVR2) headset on PlayStation 5.
Below is what Mojang had to say about VR/MR support as part of their latest update’s changelog;
VR / MR
Our ability to support VR/MR devices has come to an end, and will no longer be supported in updates after March of 2025, when you will receive your final update. After you receive the final update, you will still receive updates on your PC and be able to play without a VR/MR device. From this point on you can keep building in your worlds, and your Marketplace purchases (including Minecoins) will continue to be available on a non-VR/MR graphics device such as a computer monitor. You will no longer be able to use your VR/MR device with Minecraft as it will no longer be supported in the latest updates.
If you are a fan of Minecraft in VR, PC gamers can still enjoy unofficial VR support through mods. Minecraft’s Java edition has Vivecraft (for SteamVR-compatible VR headsets) and Questcraft (for Meta Quest headsets). This means that Minecraft players can still play a version of the game in VR. That said, this will be of no help to the players who already have worlds in the non-Java versions of the game.
Sadly, VR has not proved popular enough to justify long-term support from Minecraft’s developers. That may change if VR suddenly receives widespread adoption. That said, the return of VR support for Minecraft seems unlikely, at least for now.
