Modders turn PC handhelds into the ultimate DS Emulator
Modders turn PC handhelds into the Ultimate DS emulation machines with DNA Duo add-on
The past month has brought some big changes to the Nintendo DS emulation scene. For starters, MelonDS 1.0 has been released, bringing major changes to the emulator. One of the biggest features is the addition of multi-window support, allowing the emulator to be used with multi-screen devices. This was a much-requested feature, as it now enables multi-screen DS emulation, giving users a more DS-like experience. This change has enabled the creation of multi-screen mods for devices like Valve’s Steam Deck, creating the perfect DS emulator.
DNA Mobile Gaming has created an add-on for devices like Valve’s Steam Deck, ASUS’ ROG Ally, and other handhelds. It adds a 1080p OLED top screen to these devices, making them perfect for dual-screen device emulation. With the DNA Duo, Valve’s Steam Deck is now the ultimate DS emulator.
Right now, DNA Mobile Gaming is selling pre-orders for its OLED add-ons. The video below showcases a prototype of this product. The device uses the USB Type-C connection on PC handhelds and features pass-through support for charging and additional connectivity. Currently, prototypes feature 3D-printed shells, but the final product will be injection-moulded.
Note that dual-screen DS emulation does not require DNA Mobile Gaming’s add-on. It’s just a purpose-built screen that brings dual-screen support to PC handhelds. Obviously, other options are available, especially if you go down the DIY route and build your own.

Until now, DS emulation on devices like the Steam Deck and ASUS ROG Ally hasn’t been great. Before now, both screens were one a single window and sat side-by-side. Once dual window/screen support came to MelonDS, gamers had better options.
