Steam Link in now available on 3rd party devices

Back in October 2016, Valve and Samsung announced that they would be working together to bring Steam link support to future TVs, allowing PC gamers to easily stream their games to the living room for some on-the-sofa gaming.

Valve's Steam Link is a £40 add-on, though it is currently available online for as little as £12 today thanks to Steam's summer sale. Even so, having this functionality built into your TV is a great feature and would certainly be enough to convince some PC gamers to choose Samsung over other brands.

In the US, owners of 2016/2017 UHD TV models from Samsung are able to download their beta Steam Link App, allowing PC gamers to test the app's functionality before its official release later this summer. During this beta 1080p 60FPS streaming will be supported, with 4K options and additional controller support coming later.

PCGAMER's Wes Fenlon has tested the app's functionality at 1080p 60FPS, claiming that the app works just as well as Valve's dedicated Steam Link hardware, but admits that issues can arise when the TV is using a wireless internet connection. Aside from this, the app did have issues using Valve's Steam Controller, but a traditional Xbox pad worked perfectly.

When using the Steam Link app from Samsung's Smart Hub, functionality is almost identical to the dedicated Steam Link box, showing a Steam Big Picture mode. Streaming did present some artefacts at 1080p 60FPS, with some games presenting noticeable lag, which means that the app still requires a lot of improvements.

The Steam Link app should come out of beta and release outside of the US later this summer, hopefully with some updated features like wireless controller support and streaming improvements.

I like the fact that Samsung are doing this, I always thought that Steam Link could be boiled down to something as simple as an app as my Nvidia Shield could stream games from my PC as well.Quote
