Nvidia's Quake II RTX will be available on Steam

Nvidia's Quake II RTX is set to be released on June 6th, offering full ray tracing on Nvidia RTX hardware through the Vulkan API. Today, it has been confirmed that Quake II RTX will be available to download on Steam, offering PC gamers access to Quake II's first three levels in their full path-traced glory.

Owners of Quake II on Steam will gain access to the remainder of the game, as well as its Multiplayer mode in Quake II RTX, with Steam handling the installation procedure. In short, by releasing Quake II RTX on Steam, Nvidia has allowed the installation process of the game to be incredibly user-friendly, which is great news for PC gamers.

Below is a brief description of Nvidia's Quake II RTX, which has been created by Nvidia's Lightspeed Studios, who built upon the work of Christoph Schied and the team at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, who created Q2VKPT (Quake II Vulkan Path Tracing). Nvidia's Quake II RTX requires Nvidia RTX hardware to run, with the company listing an RTX 2060 as the game's minimum GPU requirement.

Below are Quake II RTX's PC system requirements.

MINIMUM:

Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
OS: Windows 7 64-bit or Ubuntu 16.04.6 and newer
Processor: Intel i3-3220 or AMD Equivalent
Memory: 8 GB RAM

     About Quake II RTX

Quake II RTX builds on the work of Christoph Schied and the team at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, who added ray tracing to Quake II to create Q2VKPT (in turn building upon the Q2PRO code base). NVIDIA has introduced new path-traced visual effects, has improved texturing, and has made dozens of other changes and improvements, resulting in an experience that rivals games created today, and pushes your RTX hardware to the limit.

Pascal (GTX 1060 6GB +) supports DXR-based ray tracing, but this game will be using Vulkan.

It is likely that this will only work on Nvidia's RTX hardware.Quote

lol well that sucks.

When the highlight of your new GPU release is a 20 year old game lol. As much as I think this is really cool it's kinda pathetic if you think about it.Quote

Because it's quite possibly the only game that will run at a decent framerate with full RT on.Quote
