OpenAI launches its ChatGPT Atlas browser
ChatGPT Atlas brings AI browsing to macOS – Windows version coming soon!
OpenAI has officially released its ChatGPT Atlas web browser, which aims to challenge Google Chrome with tight AI integration. Currently, the browser is only available for macOS, though versions are planned for Windows, Android, and iOS.
With Atlas, OpenAI aims to transform web browsing by integrating AI with its ChatGPT sidebar. Users will be able to ask ChatGPT about prior web searches, allowing the AI to find the information they are searching for with ease. Users will be able to choose which websites ChatGPT can see and which will be invisible. They can also clear their browsing history and use incognito mode to hide data from this AI.
For paying ChatGPT subscribers, users can also use Agent mode to help with research and to automate tasks. Currently, Agent Mode is only available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Business users.
While AI is a neat gimmick, it remains to be seen if users want an AI web browser. If nothing else, an AI that has access to your internet history sounds a little creepy. Yes, most big internet companies harvest data, but having that personal data be used by a so-called “artificial intelligence” will be a step too far for some. Furthermore, many users will likely opt to wait for their favoured browser to adopt ChatGPT Atlas’ most useful features.
Currently, Atlas is only available on macOS. Windows, iOS, and Android versions of the browser are currently in the works.
