OpenAI reportedly plans to challenge Google Chrome with a new web browser
OpenAI reportedly plans to enter the web browsing arena, challenging Chrome’s dominance
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has reportedly built a new web browser that aims to challenge Google Chrome for web dominance.
According to a report from Reuters, the browser is due to be released over the coming weeks. It aims to change how people use the internet, integrating a chat interface while also enabling interactions with AI agents. In other words, OpenAI plans to change the web browsing experience using AI, while giving OpenAI access to more raw data.
If successful, OpenAI could put pressure on Google’s AdSense money printer. Chrome’s success is a significant contributor to Alphabet’s ad business, which accounts for the majority of the group’s revenue. Chrome’s user data allows Alphabet/Google to target ads more effectively, increasing their profitability. It also makes Google the world’s default search engine, as Chrome is the world’s most popular browser.
OpenAI’s web browser will bring the company’s services to a wider audience, integrating AI into the personal and professional lives of users. While AI could prove to be a useful tool for internet users, it remains to be seen how OpenAI will use the data from its web browser. Furthermore, it is unclear whether the integration of AI will benefit or harm ad-supported websites and internet services. If OpenAI were to operate the internet using a ChatGPT interface, it would likely harm website click-through rates and potentially hinder website usability.
OpenAI’s web browser presents numerous unknowns. If successful, this browser could change the internet. That said, OpenAI aren’t the first company to challenge Chrome’s dominance. Can they succeed where so many others have failed?
