PlayStation 3 Emulator RPCS3 updated with AMD Zen 5 Ryzen 9000 CPU support

RPCS3, the PlayStation 3 emulator, now supports AMD Zen 5 CPUs

RPCS3, the popular PlayStation 3 emulator, has been updated to support AMD’s upcoming Ryzen 9000 series Zen 5 processors. Thanks to an LLVM error uncovered by kd-11, AMD’s new CPUs were detected as “generic” processors, resulting in poor emulator performance and other issues. Now, RPCS3 v0.0.32-16742 or newer versions now allows Ryzen 9000 CPUs to work more optimally with RPCS3.

This fix is a temporary workaround that effectively allows RPCS3 to treat AMD Zen 5 CPUs as AMD Zen 4 processors. Future versions of RPCS3 with an updated LLVM will allow Zen 5 CPUs to be detected properly.

Before this update, early users of AMD’s Ryzen 9000 series CPUs experienced crashing and sub-optimal performance with AMD’s new CPUs. Thankfully, these issues were the result of a minor software issue that was quickly fixed by the RPCS3 team.

AMD’s Ryzen 9000 series CPUs are expected to perform well when emulating PlayStation 3 games. RPCS3, like some other emulators, benefits from AVX-512 support. One of the key improvements to Zen 5 is its boosted AVX-512 performance. When combined with other architectural improvements, AMD’s Zen 5 CPUs should be able to deliver boost PS3 emulation speeds compared to Zen 4.

Recently, the RPCS3 emulator celebrated its 13th anniversary. Now, the emulator has 70% of the PlayStation 3’s library classed as “playable”. Unquestionably, RPCS3 is now the best way to replay many PlayStation 3 classics. This is because the emulator can run many of these classic games at higher framerates and resolutions than original PlayStation 3 hardware can. Moreover, mods are available for some PS3 games to deliver further improvements.
