Sony's "Games as a Service" titles will be launching on PlayStation 5 and PC on the same day
In an interview with the French YouTuber Julien Chièze, Sony's head of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, Hermen Hulst, confirmed that the company's first-party live-service games will be launching simultaneously on PC and PlayStation 5.
With live-service/Games as a Service (GaaS) titles, it is in Sony's best interest to launch with strong engagement and with as many players as possible. With this in mind, launching games on PC and PlayStation 5 simultaneously is one way to maximise the potential player base of their future games. Please note that Sony is not interested in releasing their story-focused games on PC at the same time as their PlayStation 5 counterparts, as it is in Sony's best interest to encourage gamers to utilise their hardware/software platform.
What about Sony's other games?
"I think going forward we’ll see at least a year between releases on our own platform on PlayStation and on the PC platform." That's what Sony;s Herman Hulst had to say about future PlayStation-to-PC conversions. PlayStation 5 will be the place where Sony's first party games will be playable first, with PC acting as a secondary platform for the company. This release schedule allows Sony to generate additional earnings from their PlayStation exclusive titles, while keeping some level of exclusivity for the platform.
Live-service games will be an exception from Hulst's "at least a year" rule, as these releases will be releasing "day-and-date" on both PC and PlayStation 5.
