While AMD has not officially revealed their RX 590 graphics card, the evidence is quickly mounting to support its existence, with the graphics card now appearing on the Final Fantasy XV benchmarking webpage, revealing a significant performance leap over the RX 480 and RX 580.

When compared to a standard RX 480, the RX 590 offers a performance uplift of between 10% and 25%, making it notably faster than both AMD’s RX 480 and RX 580, allowing the RX 590 to close the performance gap between the RX 580 and GTX 1060, or surpass it at specific graphical settings.

This performance leap will heat things up in the mid-range graphics card market, giving AMD an edge over their competition’s ageing Pascal offerings. If these kinds of performance leaps are available in other games, it is likely that the RX 590 will be able to surpass the GTX 1060 in most of today’s PC games, where the RX 580 and GTX 1060 typically offer similar performance levels.

At this time there is no trace of Nvidia’s RTX 2060, which makes it likely that we will be seeing the GTX 1060 remain as Nvidia’s mid-range competitor for quite some time. Rumour has it that Nvidia plans to refresh their GTX 1060 series with GDDR5X memory, which could give the series enough memory bandwidth to compete favourably with the RX 590.
