Next-generation consoles may be available, but few gamers have truly seen what these systems are capable of. With most modern games being cross-generation titles, they are shackled to the limitations of older systems, limiting the potential of their next-generation counterparts. Those limitations are gone for PlayStation 5’s Ratchet & Clank game, and the results are staggering.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is due to release on PlayStation 5 on June 11th, making explicit use of all of PlayStation 5’s features. The PS5’s lightning-fast SSD will be used to deliver near-instant loading times and unique multi-dimensional gameplay mechanics. At the same time, the console’s other hardware features allow Insomniac games to create a world that looks more like a CG movie than a videogame.

Insomniac Games has showcased the PlayStation 5’s potential, showcasing a game that would be impossible to create on last-generation systems. Every portal jump would require a lengthy loading screen on PlayStation 4, and the console would not be powerful enough to create such large and active game worlds.

With the power of PlayStation 5, Ratchet and Clank’s gameplay has become more mobile than ever, allowing players to Rift through environments while also enabling fast traversal mechanics using NPC creatures. This game wouldn’t be possible on PlayStation 4, making it clear why the world needed new consoles to push gaming to its next level.

In the 15-minute trailer below, Insomniac showcases the processing power of PlayStation 5, the potential of the system’s SSD, visuals that have been enhanced with ray tracing and more. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart gives us a look at what next-generation games looks like, and we are all for it.
