Relic Entertainment has become an independent developer

Relic Entertainment is no longer owned by SEGA

Relic Entertainment, the developer behind the Company of Heroes franchise, has announced that it is now an independent developer.

With the help of an external investor, Relic Entertainment has become an independently-run game developer. The studio is no longer owned by SEGA. This news comes as SEGA announced 240 layoffs.

Relic’s latest games include Company of Heroes 3 and Age of Empires IV, both of which have received favourable reviews. Relic’s also known for the Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War series, and the first two Homeworld games.

Relic is not the only developer to have become independent recently. At the start of this month, Toys for Bob announced their independence from Activision. Could more developers become independent over the coming months?

Relic has confirmed that they will continue developing Company of Heroes 3. In fact, the studio has stated that their “Coral Viper” update for Company of Heroes 3 will no release earlier than expected. This update will now release three weeks early, arriving on April 2nd instead of April 23rd.

At this time it is unclear what Relic’s plans are now that they are independent. Will there be a Company of Heroes 4? Could Dawn of War 4 be on the horizon? Who knows?
