Relic refocus on new projects – fails to hit sales targets with Dawn of War III

In April 2017 Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III was released worldwide, bringing a mixture of RTS and MOBA elements to deliver a unique iteration within the series, one which proved unable to maintain a large playerbase and ultimately failed to hit Ralic’s sales targets.

While the game maintains a loyal playerbase, Ralic and their publisher Sega have now stated that this group of players is too small to justify the release of any new content for the game, which means that no new race DLC is on the horizon or any expansion packs. Dawn of War III released with three races, the Space Marines, the Eldar and the Orks, with fans of the series expecting to receive more content at a later date though DLC packs or an expansion.

Eurogamer has been given the following statement, confirming that Relic is now shifting their focus to a new project, though at this time it is unknown whether or not the developers will ever work on another Dawn of War game.

While Dawn of War 3 has a dedicated player base, it didn’t hit the targets we were expecting at launch, and it hasn’t performed the way we had hoped since. It’s been tough for us as professionals who want to make great games for our players, and for us as people who care a lot about what we do.

When a game underperforms, plans need to change. With Dawn of War 3, we simply don’t have the foundation we need to produce major content. We’re working in close partnership with Sega and Games Workshop to determine the best course of action, while shifting focus to other projects within our portfolio.

Right now Relic is currently working on Microsoft’s new Age of Empires game as well as another unannounced title, though at this time not much is known about either game. Both titles have no set release date.

While Dawn of War III offered some… interesting gameplay, the title ultimately felt too slow for many core RTS fans, thanks to the game’s drip feeding of resources, expensive units and long unit creation times. For me, this drained a lot of the potential excitement from the title, especially within the game’s campaign mode. Progressing through the game was a slow process, making it easy to see why the game didn’t maintain the following the Relic was hoping for.
