Shadow of the Tomb Raider will feature an updated engine and support 4K 60FPS on Xbox One X
Shadow of the Tomb Raider will support 4K 60FPS on Xbox One X
In a recent interview with Electric Playground, Eidos Montreal’s studio head David Anfossi stated that the Shadow of the Tomb Raider would run at 4K 60FPS on Xbox One X, using new rendering and lighting techniques to offer better visuals than its predecessor.Â
Right now it is unknown if Shadow of the Tomb Raider will run at a native 4K or a variable resolution, though the prospect of the next Tomb Raider running at 60FPS on consoles is undoubtedly an impressive feat. At this time it is unknown if basic Xbox One and PS4 consoles will be able to play the game at 60FPS or a lower 30FPS framerate.Â

Over time, Rise of the Tomb Raider has been updated time and time again for both PC and consoles, delivering DirectX 12 support on PC and support bot both the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro with post-launch patches.Â
The PC version of Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be created by Nixxes with the help of Nvidia, just like Rise of the Tomb Raider, which means that we should be able to expect great things from the game’s PC version.Â

With such a high-performance target on consoles, it is likely that the game’s PC version will also be easy to run, though the PC version will undoubtedly include higher-end graphical features to push the limits of PC hardware, especially given Nvidia’s involvement.Â
Rise of the Tomb Raider released with several performance modes on Xbox One X, with a Native 4K mode that runs at 30FPS, an Enhanced mode with upscaled 4K visuals with additional graphical upgrades and a performance mode with a 60FPS target. The game’s performance mode did not run at a steady 60FPS and as such suffers from dips to performance with screen tearing.Â
It is likely that Shadow of the Tomb Raider will feature both a high-resolution mode and a high frame rate mode on Xbox One X, with 4K acting as a coverall term for an above 1080p resolution that is upscaled for 4K using checkerboarding or a similar technique.Â
