Sony forces The Last of Us Part II Multiplayer Mod cancellation

Sony asks modder to cancel The Last of Us Part II’s highly anticipated multiplayer mod

Game modding is one of the great joys of PC gaming, and good mods can often drive stronger long-term sales. Gamers get to enjoy free content, modders get to make and share their creations, and developers can benefit from increased game sales. It’s a win-win-win situation. Sadly, in the case of The Last of Us Part II’s highly anticipated multiplayer mod, Sony has decided to step in.

Unfortunately, Speclizer, the modder behind The Last of Us Part II’s multiplayer mod, has been asked by Sony not to release it. The mod was due to be released this month, which means Sony stepped in to cancel it at the worst possible time. The mod has been in development since January, and Sony decided now is the time to stop it. While Speclizer says that Sony’s letter was “requesting for the mod not to be released”, would you like to know what happens after denying a request from Sony? Regardless of whether this was a request or demand, one thing is clear: Sony killed this project.

Sony kills The Last of Us multiplayer, again

This isn’t the first time that Sony has killed a The Last of Us multiplayer game project. For years, Naughty Dog has been developing “The Last of Us Online” as part of PlayStation’s live service gaming push. This project was cancelled in 2023. Now, Sony is preventing fans from creating their own The Last of Us multiplayer experiences.

Based on the already released gameplay for The Last of Us Part II’s multiplayer mod, it looks fun. If anything, it could have encouraged many PC gamers to purchase The Last of Us Part II on PC. If anything, this project could have benefited Sony. Now, PC gamers have another reason to dislike Sony. First, they stopped bringing their single-player games to PC. Now they are actively stopping PC game mods from being released.
