Sony shuts down Bluepoint Games, the remake masters
Sony shuts down Bluepoint Games less than five years after acquiring it
Sony has confirmed to Bloomberg that it will be shutting down Bluepoint Games in March. The studio’s closure will result in the loss of 70 jobs and mark the end of a studio with an almost impeccable legacy.
Bluepoint Games is well-known for remaking and remastering classic games. Popular Bluepoint remakes/remasters include Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, the PlayStation 4 Remake of Shadow of the Colossus (and the original’s PS3 remaster), and the PS3/PS Vita’s God of War Collection. More recently, the studio created the PlayStation 5 remake of Demon’s Souls. All of these remakes/remasters are highly regarded.
After Demon’s Souls, Sony tasked Bluepoint with creating a “live-service” God of War game. This project was reportedly cancelled in January 2025, not long after Sony’s failed launch of Concord in 2024.
Sony has released the following statement to the media;
Following a recent business review, the decision was made to close Bluepoint Games in March,
Bluepoint Games is an incredibly talented team and their technical expertise has delivered exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community. We thank them for their passion, creativity, and craftmanship.

Bluepoint’s closure is a result of Sony’s failure
Bluepoint’s closure is part of Sony’s multi-year “Live service” games disaster. In 2024, we had Concord, a game that closed just two weeks after its release. This project’s failure is a turning point for Sony’s “live service” ambitions. Note that other cancelled projects include The Last of Us Online, a Twister Metal live service game, and a Spider-Man live service game. Sony has invested heavily in creating the next big live service game, and most of these efforts have been resounding failures.
After creating the hugely successful Demon’s Souls remake, Sony tasked the studio with creating a God of War live service game. If that is not mismanagement, I don’t know what is. Sony has a rich library of games that could be remade or remastered. Instead, Sony tasked Bluepoint with creating a game that sits far outside the studio’s area of expertise.
Sony’s only recent live-service success is Helldivers 2, and it’s not from PlayStation Studios. PlayStation’s live service push was led by Jim Ryan, who left Sony in 2024. PlayStation is still recovering from this disastrous direction. Sadly, Bluepoint has become the newest victim of this misguided effort. Sony could have used the studio’s talents wisely, but they chose to squander them on an unsuitable project.
